If you want an easy craft Halloween project, this pumpkin cake may be just what you are looking for. With a few simple tricks, you will have a smooth frosted cake, ready for a jack-o-lantern face.

Craft project time: 1 hour

Supplies

  • Oval or round cake pan

  • Cake mix or recipe

  • Premade frosting, such as Duncan Hines brand

  • Red and yellow food coloring

  • Orange, green and black Wilton food coloring paste

  • 4 decorating bags

  • Couplers for decorating bag

  • Wilton star tip #21

  • Wilton round tip #12

  • Wilton round tip #3

  • 1 recipe of Wilton’s Buttercream Icing

    Ingredients include

  • 1 cup of shortening

  • 1 teaspoon clear vanilla

  • 2-3 tablespoons water

  • 4 cups of powdered sugar

  • 1 tablespoon Wilton’s meringue powder

Directions

Prepare and Frost Cake

  1. Bake cake according to recipe. Allow to cool.

  2. Mix 8 drops of red food coloring and 12 drops of yellow food coloring in the pre-made frosting container. Mix well until the frosting is orange.

  3. Place the whole container in the microwave for 30 seconds.

  4. Stir frosting. It should be liquid and easy to pour. If it is not the right consistency, microwave for an additional 10 seconds. Stir well.

  5. Place the cooled cake on a wire rack and place the wire rack on a cookie sheet. The cookie sheet will catch any frosting drips.

  6. Slowly pour the liquid frosting over the cake, coating evenly. You may tilt the cake to help coat. If necessary, use a spatula. The top of the cake should look completely smooth.

  7. Allow the frosting to crust over and dry.

  8. When the frosting is completely dry, move the cake to a serving dish. You are ready to decorate your craft Halloween project.

Prepare the Buttercream Icing

  1. Beat 1 cup shortening, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 2 tablespoons water together.

  2. Sift in 4 cups powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon meringue powder. Mix well.

  3. If icing is too thick, add water ½ teaspoon at a time, mixing well after each water addition.

  4. Tint 2 cups of buttercream frosting orange with the food coloring paste.

  5. Tint 1/4 cup green.

  6. Tint 1/4 cup black.

Decorate the cake

  1. Using star tip #21 and orange frosting, move up and down the sides of the cake, in one continuous motion without overlapping. This creates a rough, pumpkin-looking finish to the outside of the cake.

  2. Choose the spot on the top of the cake for the stem. Using star tip #21 and green frosting, pipe out the green stem.

  3. Using round tip #12 and white frosting, pipe out round circles for the eyes. With star tip #21 and the orange frosting, make one star in the middle of each of the white circles. With round tip #3 and black frosting, place a small dot in the center of each of the orange stars. Draw in the eyebrows. The eyes are now finished.

  4. Using round tip #3 and the black frosting, draw the nose shape you wish. I chose a lopsided triangle. Using star tip #21 and the orange frosting, fill in the nose with stars.

  5. Using star tip #21 and the orange frosting, make a zig zag line for the pumpkin mouth. Draw the teeth with white using tip #12.

Another option is to use edible markers to decorate the face.
