Witchy Halloween Craft

Easy Craft For Kids

A great Halloween craft for kids is an easy mini Bundt cake made into a witch jack-lantern. If you prepare the witch's hat in advance, this can be a wonderful Halloween party craft that can be eaten after it is made.

Craft Project Time: 1 hour (includes baking time)

Supplies

  • Mini Bundt cake pan

  • Cake mix or recipe

  • 1 cup of powdered sugar

  • 2-3 tablespoons of milk

  • 1 sugar ice cream cone

  • Melting chocolate (the darker, the better)

  • Red and orange food coloring

  • Black Wilton food coloring paste

  • Edible writing markers

Directions

  1. Melt chocolate according to package instructions.

  2. Add 1/2 to 1 tablespoons milk to melted chocolate so it pours smoothly.

  3. When chocolate is the right consistency, add a small amount of black food coloring paste. Mix well.

  4. Roll the sugar cone in the melted chocolate, coating entirely. Place on wax paper to dry.

  5. Slowly pour a small amount of chocolate around the bottom of the cone, allowing it to flow out to make the brim of the hat.

  6. Allow chocolate to completely harden. This may take several hours. For best results, allow the chocolate to harden overnight.

  7. Bake cake according to recipe. Allow cake to cool.

  8. Sift the powdered sugar into a bowl and add 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix well. If the glaze is too dry, add additional milk 1 teaspoon at a time. The glaze should flow easily without being too runny.

  9. Add 2 drops of red food coloring and 3 drops of yellow food coloring to the glaze. Mix well to achieve an orange color.

  10. When the cake is completely cool, slowly pour the glaze on top of the cake, allowing it to run down the sides to cover the cake. If necessary, use a spatula to move the glaze to cover the cake.

  11. Allow the glaze to dry completely.

  12. When the glaze is dry, move the cake to a serving dish. Using the edible markers, draw the jack-o-lantern’s face. Triangle eyes, square nose and jagged teeth are pictured. Make the face as scary or sweet as you desire.

Another option is to use frosting. Either make your own to decorate the face or use Wilton’s cookie decorating paste to decorate and add any embellishments you wish.

  13. When the face is finished, spread a small amount of glaze or frosting to the top of the jack-o-lantern. Place the sugar cone witch’s hat on top of the cake.
