Adorable Little Girls Hair Bows

Match Any Outfit She’s Got

Little girls hair bows can cost a lot if you buy them at a boutique, and the bows may not exactly match the outfit your little girl is wearing. However, you can learn to make hair bows for girls that are as adorable as boutique bows and much less expensive. Best of all, you can match any outfit you want.

The following instructions are for making a 2-layer side-by-side hair bow. This little girls hair bow has one tail up and one tail down. The bow pictured is a medium size bow.

Craft Project time: 30 minutes (may take longer the first few times until you get the hang of it)

Supplies

  • 3/4 yard of ribbon for the bottom layer

  • 3/4 yard of ribbon for the top layer

  • 4 inches of 3/8 inch wide ribbon for the bow center

  • 8 inches of wire ribbon, cut in half

  • Embellishment for center (i.e. flower, jewel, etc.)

  • Fray Check

  • Glue gun and glue

  • Fabric scissors

  • Wire cutting Scissors

Do not use the same scissors to cut the ribbon and the wire or your fabric scissors will dull.

Tips for Selecting Hair Bow Ribbon

  • Until you have had a lot of practice making little girls hair bows, I would recommend using ribbon at least 1 inch wide.

  • The bottom layer of ribbon is usually the widest ribbon, although both layers can be the same width.

  • Sheer ribbon often makes a great top layer, although neither ribbon needs to be sheer.

  • Grosgrain ribbon is easier to work with than satiny ribbon, which may slide. Grosgrain ribbon should be used if you are covering the hair clip to prevent it from sliding out of the hair.

Directions

  1. HB1Hold the ribbon (right side up) over the first joint of your index finger. Your thumb will hold the ribbon in place. The tail should be in your palm and the ribbon length over your fingers, as pictured.

  2. HB1Scrunch the ribbon together over your index finger, making sure it does not fold over. To do this, scrunch half of the ribbon together and then the other half. The ribbon should look slightly gathered. Hold in place with your thumb. Your thumb is going to get a lot of work, so be prepared.

  3. HB1Make a loop going up and hold in place with your thumb at the same point on your index finger. The end of the ribbon should be side by side the original piece of ribbon on your finger. Make the loop the exact size you would like it to be in the bow. This is the loop that the rest of the loops will be compared to.

  4. HB1Scrunch the ribbon together over your index finger as before. Hold in place with your thumb.

  5. HB1Make a loop going down and bring the ribbon side by side the other ribbon ends on your index finger. Make sure that your bottom loop is the same size as your top loop. This is your second loop.

  6. Scrunch the ribbon together, as before.

  7. HB1Make another loop going up and lay the ribbon end side by side the other ribbons on your index finger. This is loop number 3. Make sure it is the same size as the top loop.

  8. HB1Scrunch the ribbon together.

  9. HB1Make your final loop on the bottom and lay the ribbon side by side the other ribbons. Look at the bow and make sure all four of the loops are the same size. Scrunch.

  10. HB1Take the ribbon wire and loop it around the center of the bow where your index finger and thumb meet. Slide the wire behind the ribbon on your index finger and in front of the ribbon on your thumb. Make sure not to let go of the ribbon or you may lose your grip and have to start over.

  11. Tie the ribbon wire in a double knot on the back of the ribbon. Cut off the ends of the wire. Your bottom layer bow is finished.

  12. Repeat the above steps with the top layer ribbon.

  13. HB1HB1When both layers of ribbon are finished, place a small amount of hot glue on the center of the bottom ribbon and glue the top layer to the bottom layer.

  14. HB1Wrap your center ribbon around the middle of the bow, covering the ribbon wire.

  15. HB1Hot glue the end of the ribbon on the back of the bow.

  16. Trim the edge of the center ribbon. Place a small amount of fray check on the ribbon end that is on top to prevent unraveling. Glue that end down securely.

  17. HB1When the bow is together, trim the ribbon ends to an equal length. Cut at an angle away from your body.

  18. HB1Place a small amount of fray check on the ends of all the ribbons.

  19. Hot glue your embellishment to the center of your bow.

  20. Hot glue the clip onto the back of the finished hair bow.
