Directions
A placemat purse is a simple project that even a child as young as 10 can make, as long as there is adult supervision with the sewing machine. You will love this simple placemat purse pattern.
- Find the right side of the placemat. This is the side you want to be on the outside of your purse.
- Measure the width of the placemat.
- Cut two pieces of ribbon the width of the placemat.
- Pin the ribbon 3 inches from each side of the placemat. This will be the top of the purse when the sides are sewn together. Three inches is the area I like the ribbon to be, but you can pin the ribbon anywhere you would like.
Tip: fold the placemat in half to see where the ribbon will be when the purse is finished.
- Fold placemat in half vertically, right sides together. (The ribbon will be on the inside.) Pin the sides.
- Sew a straight 3/8 inch seam on each side. Then sew a zig zag stitch to reinforce the seams. DO NOT TRIM SEAM. If you trim, your placemat will probably fray. A placemat already has a nice finish, so trimming is unnecessary.
- Turn placemat right side out.
- Cut the remaining ribbon in half for the purse straps.
- Optional, but highly recommended: Place a small amount of fray check on each ribbon end. This step will prevent the ribbon from fraying after the project is completed.
- Pin one end of the ribbon inside the bag, 2 inches from the left side and 1 inch from the top of the bag. Make sure the print on the ribbon is facing out. (The printed side of ribbon should be pinned to wrong side of placemat.)
- Sew the ribbon to the placemat by sewing a square, where the pins are in the picture.
- Pin the other end of the ribbon inside the bag, 2 inches from the right side and 1 inch from the top of the bag.
- Sew the ribbon to the placemat by sewing a square.
- Repeat with the second ribbon on the other side of the bag so you have two handles.
- Glue embellishments on as desired.
Congratulations! You are finished with your project. Using different placemats, ribbons or embellishments can give you many options and variety in this simple purses.
